Organic matter affects phosphorus recovery during vivianite crystallization

Abstract Vivianite crystallization is a promising route for phosphorus (P) recovery from P-rich wastewater. However, organic matter (OM) in wastewater may influence vivianite formation. In this study, the effects of four representative OMs, glucose, bovine serum albumin (BSA), humic acid (HA) and sodium alginate (SA), on P by were investigated. The results showed that efficiency was inhibited HA SA, declining 3.7% 12.1% under (100 mg/L) SA (800 mg/L), respectively. BSA, affected aggregated form crystals. particle size decreased presence SA. Subsequent mechanistic exploration indicated complexation between OM Fe2+ main cause reduction. coprecipitation with could reduce zeta potential crystal surface, resulting smaller size. nucleation sites provided BSA transfer single plate-like agglomerate to multilayer agglomerate.
